Economic period & freshness

Calculation uses the latest completed observation available at evaluation time, with its actual economic period and original availability. An older period contributes to assessment only within the configured source-age limit. Newly observed missing or invalid evidence is not replaced with an earlier value. Source status uses economic-age thresholds, not a release calendar; no future release time is inferred.

What this value measures

U.S. nonfarm payroll employment

Output the original published us_nonfarm_payrolls observation for the latest available completed monthly period.

Total nonfarm payroll employment counts jobs on establishment payrolls, not distinct employed persons; it excludes farm employment and other CES out-of-scope employment. Monthly estimates are revised and subject to annual benchmark and seasonal revisions. Preserve preliminary and revised source footnotes with each vintage. The primary assessment compares employment levels across three complete calendar months. Positive or negative change is descriptive evidence, not a calibrated recession probability. No missing month is interpolated. FIRST_RETRIEVAL governs availability of the current revised API window; annual observations are excluded. Payroll employment and CPS unemployment describe related labor conditions; they do not establish two independent confirmations.
